Blogroll Etiquette

Blogging is widely known as informal way of writing. Thus, any 'rule' surrounding blogging is always met with a debate. But for me, some rules have to be observed to ensure that blogging continues to thrive.

I have my blogroll on my main blog. All links are followed. But I will be changing that because I want to make that blog more SEO friendly. When I put up that blog before, I wanted it to be just a personal blog. But now I really want to pimp it and try to pump more traffic in.

First, I'll be putting in nofollow links on the blogroll. Those who gave me nofollow links will also get nofollow links from me, except on special cases. When I put in people on my blogroll (upon my request), I put in dofollow links for them hoping that they'll give me the same. If they don't, I don't mind but I'll change their links to nofollow too. If people request to be added, I simply put in the same kind of link they give me.

But it extends to more than that. For me, a blogroll is kind of a pact between bloggers. It's an agreement, you rub my back and I'll rub yours. This is where ethics plays a role. If you added someone on a blogroll, please make sure they stay there. If you are changing your theme, make sure that the blogroll remains intact. Removing someone from your blogroll or removing your blogroll all-together is like breaking the pact.

This can be a minor detail for some bloggeres who have hundreds of people on their blogroll. But then again, I hope that every blogger puts in extra effort in their blogroll instead of looking at it as just another way to get inlinks.

  1. Agree... the etiquette above is a must on every bloggers and website owners.

Though some people doesn't follow this kind of etiquette, like this tech site that I had linksxchanged with(blogger dati gamit nya) but when he had his own domain and hosting, he just removed all the links on his blogroll.

Kawawa naman ung mga bloggers na nde alam na wala na pala sila sa listahan nya. =(

  2. You're right. Also, if something should happen to your blogroll, a blogger or webmaster could at least put a notice that his blogroll was compromised.
